Let’s look at these one by one: The Lord said, (1) if you follow my decrees, (2) observe my laws and (3) keep all my commands and (4) obey them, I will fulfill through you the promise I gave to David your father. In Jesus we are saved by grace. In day-to-day life, however, walking step-in-step with the Lord should be carefully done. First, follow God’s decrees. God’s decrees are his principles that he sets in motion that everyone can see, that work like gravity, that remind us that what God decrees is sovereign and can be trusted. We don’t lean on things that God has not decreed. He lean on what God has decreed. This also includes promises that God has over you. Follow God’s decrees. Second, observe His laws. In the Bible, God has laws, such as the 10 Commandments. Observe the laws that God set and apply them accurately. Third, keep all of God’s commands. Which means hold on to them, cherish them, love them. The psalmist said in psalm 119:47, “How I delight in your commands! How I love them!” Hold on and cherish what God commands. They are most lovely because these are not just the commands that we read, but they are the commands He intimately speaks to each of us and how he leads us because He loves us and cherishes us so deeply. And fourthly, Obey his commands. We could cherish them and not obey them. I could love a song and know all of the lyrics to that song, but I may not even agree with what it is saying, nor actually do anything that the lyrics are suggesting in that song. Obeying God’s commands brings on a new level of devotion. They are putting our thoughts, and our words and our feelings all in alignment and orchestration with our actions; into what we actually do. Let us pray for each other to do these things, not when it’s easiest, but when we are put to the test. May God bless you and help you every day to follow God’s decrees, observe His Word, keep His commands, and lovingly obey them everyday.
